GastroIntestinal Surgery ( commonly termed as Gastro surgery) is the general terminology used for any operations on the GastroIntestinal system. Generally they can be divided into those for benign diseases and those for treating cancer of the GastroIntestinal system. These operations are done either as open surgeries or as laparoscopic (Keyhole) surgeries.
Most of the operations for benign disorders of the GastroIntestinal system is done via laparoscopic approach. These include operations for Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease ( “reflux”), achalasia cardia, gastric dysmotility, non healing gastric ulcers, gallstones, bowel obstruction due to adhesions, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disorder etc. Most of these procedures need only 2 or 3 days of admission. Day surgery procedures are done for diseases like haemorrhoids ( piles), fissure, polyps etc.
We follow the latest guidelines currently in practise in the USA and UK in the management of GastroIntestinal cancers. This includes operations for oesophageal, gastric, colonic and rectal cancers. Most of the operations are done through a minimally invasive approach. We follow a multi disciplinary approach which involves multiple appropriate specialities to offer a comprehensive treatment for the patients.
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) deals with the management of diseases of General Surgery, Gastro-Intestinal Surgery and Bariatric surgery. The department is headed by Dr Paul Jose MS, MRCS, MD, FRCS, who has undergone training in the United Kingdom and USA. He has completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery & Bariatric surgery at the University of Iowa, USA. He has also completed a Fellowship in GastroIntestinal Cancer at St James University Hospital, Leeds, UK and has worked in both countries for more than a decade. At the department of MIS at Kinder Hospital, India, the treatment protocols followed are the same as at the centres of excellence in the UK and USA.
We offer the same level and expertise of care. Emphasis is given to management of pain and early return to normal activities. Keeping in mind the need of moving population and medical tourism, we offer consultation and follow up via different media like WhatsApp, Skype and email in addition to telephone. We also liaise with a patient’s primary doctor so as to ensure continuing medical care.
Most of the operations are done Laparoscopically (via keyhole). These include treatment of all types of hernia, appendicectomy, diseases of breast (both benign and cancerous). Almost all our elective operations can be done as a day care procedure or need only an overnight stay in the hospital.
We offer complete treatment of cancer of any part of the GastroIntestinal system. This includes a multi disciplinary team approach involving other surgical, medical and oncology specialties as required. Almost all our benign GastroIntestinal operations are done laparoscopically. This includes removal of Gallbladder, operations for hiatus hernia and reflux disease, achalasia cardia, etc. We also offer management of piles, fistula, fissure and rectal prolapse.
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
All our operations are done Laparoscopically. We follow the same protocols and offer the same operations that are accepted in centres of excellence in the United Kingdom and USA.
